Mission almost accomplished

Hi good fellas!
I will talk like a storyteller. but first of all I need a soundtrack...Selection is quite easy:

After three months of long and hard research in all the supermarkets...looking for informations among my collegaues, I was really discouraged. there is no way to find the object of my research in this part of Sweden. I am sure you know what I am referring to. The title of this blog, is the final goal of my permanence here and apparently my efforts were giving no results up to last Friday.  In order to accomplish my last attempt of success, I couldn't do it alone, so I asked the help of a valid support: Silvia from Geneve:
her arrival in Lund gave a new enthusiasm to my mission, and soon after her landing in Sweden we took the car for a long trip:
Destination: abroad
Country: Nimis
In this micronation, created in 1996 (nimis), storytellers talk about some hints about our beloved surstromming. The mission was not easy; the place is quite hidden on the coast and no arrows were indicating the way except for some yellow N on the trees

...but after a long walk of 30 minutes, on the shore of the sea, this was the scene that impressed our eyes:
At a first glance, some Veneto-Italian could define it as "ruinazzi" but...going a bit deeper in the details it was clear that tides were not able to create such a construction. Tunnels, wood tunnels were departing in every direction. Some of them, so tight that the bagpack was hardly passing trough the holes:

Once reached an open-to-the-sky place, we could look backward.

a systems of fortification erected by an artist? the opera of a crazy genius? the signs that we are not alone on the universe? no answers to my questions. But of course it was our destiny to be here that day and that time. and even more it was written in the pages of fate that I would have climbed the highest tower and there, right on the top of it could experience the contact with HIM!

The box stinks even when sealed....it means that is going rotten and it is better to wait that it is totally spoiled before eating it. With no reflection, my hand put it in the bag...me and Silvia ran away from Nimis before serious consequences could put our life and (mine, hers, and the one of the Sustromming) in danger.
as soon as we reached a calm place, the stress cumulated in our bones was finally vanishing
and a deep sleep took its place:

Now, I want to show you that the "rotten flavoured box" is safely in my place and to do this, you can see on the background the post I am writing

The expiring date says clearly: best before 31/12/2014, but we could think about the meaning of "best" in this context: does it mean "good", "not so bad", "better than a slap in your face", "simply disgusting"!?..who knows, but of course you are invited to the surstromming tasting contest that will be held in Farges in the new year eve of 2014! for the time being the can will be kept in the fridge in a controlled environment, waiting for its maturation!

Changing subject I am getting closer and closer to my departure from Sweden, today I booked the ferry-boat that is gonna bring me from Ystad to  Swinoujsce in Poland from where I will drive to Berlin to spend on resting week with my friend Silvia (anotherone), before my final docking in Farges! I still have to figure out how to load the trunk of my car, but considering that:
- I didn't buy new fancy or posh clothes
- I go back home with the same stuff I came here
- my car has the same dimensions of three months ago.
I realize that I could stop thinking about that!
Great then!
See you soon!

The Baaaaaand!

"The Baaaaand" was shouting Jake Blues, listening to the sermon of James Brown in Blues Brothers! and The Baaand is what is gonna play in ESS next thursday! the 22nd of August the first gig of Loading Dock Band (John: mandolin,  Zvonko: mandolin, Dave: banjo, Ken: lead fiddle, Andrea: guitar, Anders: guitar)  is gonna take place in occasion of the "End Of Summer Fika"!
As you know our playlist is a country-ish/bluegrass-ish/celtic-ish/Irish-ish and whatever sounds a bit old and "ish" and is not blues or Jazz...The office is full of banners advertising the show...so, I think there is no room left for running away...I will keep you updated with whatever material from the event!
Long time I haven't posted anything, but honestly....nothing happened in the last 3 weeks! ahaha no I am jockin'; the thing is that the exceptional summer of this year was inviting all the citizens of the Gulag (the name of the "Klostergardern student house" where I and other coleagues live) to stay in the park and enjoy, like lizards, the warm evenings.
The Gulag

I think I never had as many BBQ as in Lund...days and days with the face covered with a fine coal make-up, like a train driver of the 19th century!! Today, fortunately, is autumn...rain, wind and coat-on...so I have time to write some lines!

Great Friday night in Malmo for the opening act of the Caryfish Festival....basically the festival works like this:
  • you bring your own food;
  • you bring your own beers;
  • you bring your own shots (maaaaaany shots);
  • if you are lucky u can grab a table, if not you bring your own and also chairs;
  • YOU CAN PARTY!
Bizzarre, I know, but at least there are no lines at the food boots. I have to say that the atmosphere was quite tipsy and,  at a point, I was able to make a friend (after what I forced him to do I don't know if he still calls me "friend") drink a shot made with the salty water pouring down the crayfish.."it was really disgusting and I wanted to punch you!" (he told me after he woke up from the faint). A part from this really interesting experiences, the festival is really cool and the concerts line-up is amazing and, more than this, it is free (give your hands to the word "free")! http://malmofestivalen.se/.
To conclude the post I attach hereby a picture taken from the Malmo Central Station (the automatic voice of the train normally announce it "Màlmò Centrooooooole") that made me understand that, eventually, Sweden is not a very dangerous place to stay!
Looking at this picture I realized that I am wearing the same clothes of Friday, so I think It is a wise choice to tell you that "I am gonna blow this popsicle stand" (I learnt this new phrase to say in a really rude way...it is time to leave this place, thank you Steph, Dave and Alex for the urban English lectures!) to take a shower!
Ciao Ciao

XXX

Hei Hei,
it is tremendously hot here in the south (of Sweden), I couldn't sleep well tonight because of this!
Something that I learnt in Geneva, and is valid here as well, is that each and every silgle sunny day has to be enjoyed as if it were the last one on earth..tomorow may be raining (and infact today is gonna rain).
here you are a photo summary of the activity of the last weeks.
Heading to the Landskrona Marina

Captain Polat

Docking in Ven Island

Welcome in Ven

A landscape of Denmark from the top of Ven's Harbour

yes yes yes...I tried for the first time sailing. Of course I wasn't alone...and the experience of the crew made the journey easy and funny. My contribution to the trip was to keep the beers while Dave was working on the sails..and i think I did it well. Anyway it was an amazing experience and I hope to try it again...of course my memories fly directly to one of my favourite movies (sorry but it is an Italian one)

and I don't know if I looked more like Fantozzi or Filini...

Of course in these weeks my dear friend Guitar was always with me, and it happens more and more often that I go to work with the guitar case on my shoulders. Every Wednesday the ESS "Loading Dock" band make its reharsals and I started to join the band..Furthemore, thanks to my friend Dave, I started to participate to the Lundavagen 42 sessions that take place in a bar in Malmo. I find it simply awesome: you can stay there, drink one or two beers (or even three if u are thirsty), play, sing, clap hands,  whatever it makes a sound is welcome. Which kind of music do we play? that is super funny; I didn't know but it seems that in Sweden  Folk   music is incredibly popular...so I am dipping into these:

Aren't they amazing???
I was also asked to play some tunes during these sessions...I started with a "Sanfrancisco Bay Blues" and "Singing the Blues" but I think that I got more success when I started "je so pazzo" by Pino Daniele, so in conclusion I think that I will work a bit more on some Italian songs in order to share them with Lundavagen 42 crew and to make the world to understand that Eros Ramazzotti and Laura Pausini aren't the only artists that we can export! ahaahahah
ciao ciao!

4th WEEK

Hi,
a link that describes this week:

for the first time of my life I played rugby (Lucio C would be proud of me, I know)...one of my coleagues is French, another one is British...result, instead of the good old football match afterwork, what if we play rugby?..what if...what if, I never played before, but ok let's give it a try.
  • Easy version for beginners, touch rugby: no tackle just touch and stop the game: done
  • a bit more difficoult, walking rugby: normal rules, but not allowed to run: contacts are quite hard, but ok, my "teachers" are taking care of me.
  • Final match "normalrugbybutguysdon'ttackletoohardAndreathatisthefirsttimeforhim": 20 minutes...run as the hell, full of blue tatoos on my body and ribs like this (Andrea's ribs) more or less
The funny thing is that most of the times I committed suicide in the sense that falling - alone - I hurt my chest with MY ARM! result of this first contact: no sleep for two nights, friday night I had the fever...and moving on the bed was a real curse...next time (I already confirmed that I will participate again) I will be more careful with my strongest opponent: myself...
The evening ended with one beer with the team....no no it wasn't one, maybe two, mmm no I think more three...well I don't remember exactly, but it was really funny indeed.
hopefully now I recovered and today I was able to ride the bike and play the guitar again, so I would say that all the important things are fine, I have smoe insingicifant rpoblemsm to slpel teh wrods, but I can confrim thta I ma ok!
ahahah great!

I close saying that sun is shining outside but days are getting shorter and shorter (someone told me 7 minutes per day that is a lot!) and I can celarly see it, I am a bit sad because of that....
Ciao ciao!

Late

Hei,
it has been a while since I didnt update the blog. No justification, but I was super busy. Now I am writing you from Italy where I had to come back for some important reasons. Without entering in the details of them, just consider that since I arrived in Lund I have been there for less than 7 days out of 21...it is a bit tiring, and I would like to stop a bit in order to explore the place!
but let's proceed with a short summary.

Second Week:
Saturday morning...wake up (early as usual)....rain outside, it is clear...but there is something different in the air, don't know what's this, but yes, something different. let me open the window to check if all is ok..

Ah ok, nothing new in Geneve: it rains....STOP. GENEVE??? why am I in Geneve??? ahhhh yes now I remember. I had to come back for one week to attend a training/review applied on a real life case of a project that I followed in its design ( MEDICIS). Even though in the beginning I wasnt so motivated to travel again (laziness basically)..in the end I grabbed the first flight available (thanks to the secretaries of my group and to the travel service of CERN for the immediate answer to my request to organzie the journey) and I attended the course!
I had the great honour to be, for the first time, a real Geneve's citizen, since my beloved Farges was a bit too far(ges) to be reached without a car. Finally I was in the guests room of some friends, and I had a great time with them, in particular helping Silvia to win a match on a quiz game on the phone (the answer to the state of birth of Bob Dylan is a three points shot that still shines in the sky).
Lullaby to a dinner: Mozzarella in a lettuce-shirt
I had also time to have an Indian lunch with Leonel-Pasquale and Aurelio-Pasquale...really pleasent Madras style meal!

Third Week
before taking the plane to Italy I went a concert in Copenhagen. The artist was Corey Harris, that I had the pleasure to listen some years ago in summer event in Padova (there was a time when in my hometown sometimes there were some very good gigs...). Great root-blues artist mixing acoustic country blues with sounds and featurings from Africa and Jamaica..the result is an interesting melting pot, that his voice and charming presence make coherent and fantastic!

I was with my friend Chris who is actually living in Copenhagen....I really envy him :)..as you know I love this city, where you can also buy beers in the supermarket. I say this because in Sweden it is not allowed, and in the supermakets only low alchool beers can be found.....big drawback.
The evening spent together was amazing, also due to the anchovies pizza that I ate before reaching the airport (no way, this is the best pizza ever created, also taken into account the byeffect of it: the incredible amount of salt present that made my vains hard as steel pipes and making me thirsty as if I was out of a desert walk).

By the way I finally reached Padova where I am writing you from. I will reach back Lund on Saturday and hopefully this time will be for a longer period!
Hope to write you some Swedish words soon!
For the moment only veneto-Italian dialect cheers: "Ciao tosi, xe sentimo presto!"

SONG OF THE DAY

Surströmming: One week after

One week after

Hoi,
one week since I landed in the Skane land...just one week and iportant decisions have been taken. the biggest one is:
moving from a house like this:
To one like this:
I am not crazy and I did it for sure....there are several reasons behind this choice, but I think that the main one is:

the invisible plexiglass table that already tried to kill me and, again, put my life in serious danger once more (the picture is an artistic reconstruction of my accident...).
Instead of sticking on it the figure of the swallows, as on the highway bridges, I thought it was wise to change. Now I am in a student guest house closer to the Lund downtown...the style is a mix between a sovietic skyscraper from the inside and a page of an IKEA catalogue from the inside. The result is pretty cool, and honestly I feel more comfortable in here rather than in the previous accomodation.

The week was a short one: the 21st of June is the mid-summer party, it is an official holyday, characterized by:
- marinated herrings
- potatoes
- strawberry cakes
....about the same menu for all the celebration of the year, with the exception of the strawberrys. By the way the project team of ESS celebrated it, and surprisignly it was sunny (the tradition says that the mid-summer day is raining)

Since my arrival I got an amazing weather (to whom were mocking me about the cold and rain...one week, no rain, always sunny, an incredible temperature of 17 degrees that allowed me to wear my early spring/autumn clothes....ok?!)....and something I was not used to in the last years: my car stayed in the parking one week, I never needed to drive a 4 wheels vehicle...everything is at bike-distance...wow...I was really missing something like that...running thrugh the cobbled roads of the inner Lund....10 minutes to reach the first bar/shopping center or whatever I need. This will have terrible consequences on my last year in Farges where 10 minutes are necessary to reach the highway and then other 20 minutes to reach Geneva.

Lund, everyone told me that this period it is not the best for staying in Lund...no students, no party they say...now I got a question: is it possible that eeach and every time I go to a whatever place I arrive always too late and right before my arrival there were tons of people partying every moment of the day???? two possible answers:
- I am "a bit" unlucky; (10% possible)
- people ,when I arrive, run away; ( 9.7% possible if connected with my nickname " 'O Scacciatore")
- I live in a parallel world; (0,3% possible)
- People lie (80% possible)
By the way the town is really cute and sometimes look like the castle of Harry Potter...bricks, ivy on the walls, green everywhere, wizards, Agrids, Ermiones, kids with a lighting shape on the forehead...

No details about the work, but everything seems extremely interesting, the team gave me a warm welcome ("hei, who are you?...go away! we don't want you, we will give you an office here, under the staircase"), and I hope it will carry on like this up to theend of my period!

UPDATES ABOUT SURSTROMMING
- it is not typical from the south of Sweden;
- It comes from the northern part of the country;
- when I speak about it pople goggle and ask me surprised: how do you know avout Surstromming?
- finally none of the Swedish I met tasted it....this makes things even more challenging!

Next weeks there can be suprising events...keep in touch my readers!

SONG OF THE DAY

The idea of this space is that every morning I will post the video of the first song I listened on my mp3 device! I start today with this:

Surströmming: LUND!

Surströmming: LUND!: Finally I arrived in Lund! what a good way to toast my arrival in Sweden...cold, rain and wind! Now the weather is turning to sunny, but to...

LUND!

Finally I arrived in Lund!
what a good way to toast my arrival in Sweden...cold, rain and wind! Now the weather is turning to sunny, but today it was changing continuously...
The arrival in the new house was so easy and straightforward that it seemes that I was the owner of the house. Indeed I I have to thank my landlord that was wrote so precise directions that it was difficoult to miss the way (I prevent you with your easy sentence "Swedish people are precise" this guy is French!).
By the way: 1500 km by car....I would say easy??? yes I confirm they were really pleasant, because of the cities where I stopped and because of the people that I met.
Starting from the Swiss part of the trip:
the picture is for whom knows this bike:
Mistery man bike

nobody could steal the bike during his time in Geneva, thanks to the magic bag that was stick on the back - this according to the owner...people say simply because it was as crapy as the other bikes in Geneva -  but the picture is revealing who I am speaking about! the eye of the Tiger, the man who looks like Ray Charles when he wears sunglasses, the man who pushed the limits of the word "amazing" up to peaks that no humans ever tested before! yes, yes yes, I am speaking about Serkan!
Serkan-ray charles

The Mistery Man
a mid-day break in Basel was enough to make me understand that in Basel if I see a coat on a seat means that the place is booked (this is what a very kind lady told me..... obviously she wasnt that kind).
Mistery city!
After a light lunch in Veggie restaurant, the road ran fast up to Heidelberg. I was here few years ago during a business trip with the Euro-Japanese team of IFMIF and I still well remembered the town and original castle (one of the few cities not bombed during the WW 2). Due to the good memories of that time and of a fresh beer at the sun, I decided to stop here instead of Frankfurt as originally planned!
Saturday was a long run up to Hamburg, where, I would say, as usual, I met Meike..I promised her a dinner at my arrival, and the deal was respected please Meike I would like you to confirm this!).
Hamburg...always amazing...in the evening, with the sunset on the port, the water in the city, the water-gates (!! new word learnt yesterday)...

But there ain't nothing like a wake up alarm at 6.45 to go to the fish market to have a breakfast with the classical marinated hering sandwhich! Meike doesn't look that enthusiast, and I can belive it, because she doesn't like fish and early wake up....but I am sure that most of you would dream of such a breakfast meal!

Eating the sandwhich and on the back "a brown submarine with no impeller and no flap inside me (trad. Italian song)"

after 400 km, a ferry-boat, a the crossing of the Malmo Bridge, and few miles in the Scania region...I finally opened the door of the place that I will call house for the next three months!
It is cool! a big u-shaped house with big windows for the dark winters! I guess it will be not easy to sleep, but as usual I am excited by the first day of work in ESS so I will not sleep so much!
In conclusion, I completed the first step of the mission: landing! at my arrival I didn't see a transparent plexiglas table, and I fell on it...my adventure could finish in that moment, but no problems..Next days will be devoted to the settling down, take the measures of the house, and of the cute town of Lund!
I will keep u updated!

Finally

Hi
Wake up call tomorrow at 7 am...final check:
- fridge, empty
- baggage, prepared;
- car, dirty;
- bike, reduced in small pieces and in the trunk
- guitar, sleeping with me
- maps, already in scarsea (in my pocket)
- address of the place where I will live, in scarsea together with the map
waht else? ah yes yes I don have to forget the coffee machine and the powder...(I can't live without!)
The farewell tour today had its last stage with the breakfast together with my office neighbours Uwe, Issam, Alessandro and Fortunato (who furnished the coffee)

Rushmore mountain-like picture

In my childish imagination I was thinking in a quiet day at work...shaking hands, wishes for the summertime, complains about the weather, easy jokes about Swedish girls..no way, mates...all day  in a hurry to finalize documents before the departure! but now stop, the storm has passed away (I swear that when i wrote this a real wind and rain storm started...) and tomorrow I will start driving to the north!
I will keep you updated about possible AMAZING meetings I could have on my way.
Ciao ciao, and good night!

One week to go!

Hei,
time is running fast, less than 7 day... this week will be devoted to the huge baggage preparation....what shall I put in the boot? what is essential for the trip? what will finally fit in the small Fiesta?...all these questions will be answered during the week
After the dry run test of this morning I can proudly assume that the different pieces of my bike will find a final position in the Tetris-like arrangement of the car trunk. I can't immagine to be there without a bike....so I can leave here some clothes, but not the bike!
The trip has been drafted.
About 1500 Km divided in three stages:
  • Farges - Frankfurt (with a brunch-lunch Pit-Stop in Basel with Serkan);
  • Frankfurt - Hamburg (where hopefully I will meet my frind Meike)
  • Hamburg - Lund (where hopefully I will find the house, otherwise my beloved car will work as a caravan for the night).
Last stage of the trip will follow the stage 13th and 15th stages of the cobram's cup wow I am looking forward to be on the same roads, to take the same boat to cross the sea....wow, while I write you I am fighting against some thrills :) 13th stage  14th stage
journey

Now I think it is wise to go downtown to buy an Europe map...yes, in 2013 I don't have a GPS, so what?
Ciao ciao!

Andrea Polato

Time for introducing myself,
My name is Andrea Polato, I was born in Padova in Italy and currently living in Asserans of Farges in France, a tiny village next to the Jura mountains (Farges_wiki). One of the best happening in Asserans, is the traditional "fete d'Asserans"...a potluck party, with all the citizenship (or better the villageship) that take place one a year in July. Because of my mission I will not attend to it this summer, but my spirit will be there with the Asseranois!
Fete d'Asserans
I work as an engineer at CERN (CERN Home Page), in the field of the cooling and ventilation systems. I have a Marie Curie Fellowship in the CATHI project for the upgrade of the ISOLDE facility in its transition to HIE-ISOLDE. My tasks are related to the improvement of the ventilation system of ISOLDE in order to reach the safety standards required by the installation after the intensity upgrade and to enhance the confinement of the building (I don't want to enter in the details of this, because it may sound boring for 99% of you...and considering that the blog, up to now, had less than 100 visitors....it means that also myself could be bored...by the way if you have specific questions about my professional profile don't hesitate to contact me or consult the websites (ISOLDE/).
Before arriving here I have been working in Japan for about 2 years from 2009 to 2011. A very interesting period spent in a lovely place called Rokkasho-mura....small fisherman village on the Pacific Ocean. The place was a bit cold and lonley, but finally I could survive quite well..
typical Winter in Rokkasho
Well when I say well...we can say that I survived somehow, just consider that during two years I had a cone as a flatmate .. (Conefriend Facebook Page)
and I developed an insane relationship with a guitar...
Jammin' with a Cone-Friend

Farewell concert for a Cone-friend

Chit-chatting with Guitar
If Conefriend couldn't join me after Japan (he is really linked to Rokkasho), the guitar followed me and I carried on playing it more and more and more and more...what do I play?! bah, we can say that I love blues, but I am far to define myself as a guitar bluesman...I would like one day to reach a level that allow me to play whatever I want without the difficoulties I am having now (experiece, talent...)....anyway since "an hobby, to be an interesting hobby, has to be like a second job" I am playing as much as I can, and I must confess that the results are encouraging me to carry on in this way...my social life is reduced at the minimum level!
Of course the guitar will be in Sweden with me, so I will annoy you also describing the tunes I am working on with a special section of the blog dedicated to this!
Well I think that the post is already too long (most of the people will not arrive to read this last paragraph)..so I wish you a good Sunday!
